As a Kansas City bathroom remodeler, we hear it all the time…”We just don’t have enough space to store what we need to put in there!” Bathroom storage IS a serious issue. Okay, not serious like starving children. But…if you’re in the middle of a remodel, you’ve got some decisions to make! So here is our list of the top ideas for bathroom storage for your Kansas City home!
Clutter Control…
We all know that our bathrooms are one of the most frequent places we find clutter in our homes! Your bathroom probably gets used the most at one of the most fast-paced times of your day, and if you’re anything like us, putting things back in their place can often be neglected. If your bathroom does not have a sufficient amount of storage, then you end up knocking things around in an attempt to access what you need, which spills items, further clutters up your space and might prevent drawers or doors from closing properly. Obviously, this has the unwanted effect of creating an unattractive space in a place that should be calming.
Chances are that your bathroom has a lot of potential for freeing up the clutter. We’ve just got to figure out what the best use of space is for your room. With a little creativity and ingenuity, you will see that there are MANY options that will be stylish and easy to use!
So, as we jump in to this, start thinking beyond just the typical drawer. The standard pull-out bathroom drawer is where things go to die. Okay, okay, maybe that’s a little dramatic, but they definitely get lost in the pile in that drawer and only get found years later when you’re untangling the pile of bathroom clutter from the hair that has enveloped it… So, what about drawers inside of drawers, compartments that are tucked away or hidden, shelving units inside of your drawers…basically non-traditional places where you can tuck away all of your…stuff? Yeah. That’s where we’re going.
The Formidable Storage Tower
Get ready. Brace yourself. Now, look up. Look down. Got a slender space in your bathroom with nothing? Great place for a vertical storage unit. Don’t assume we are talking about a pre-fab from Target… A custom built storage tower gives you a free standing “closet” so to speak that is nothing but shelves and drawers designed to meet your storage needs.
Top Level Storage
Many people have done this in their kitchens…heck we’ve even got it in our RV! Why not try this out in your bathroom? A horizontal line of attractive low-height doors that open up to storage behind, all running along or near your ceiling could be exactly what you need to create space for all of that extra toilet paper you purchased from Costco, and the duplicates of extra shampoo, soap, and hair spray you stocked up on last month.
Hiding in the Hallway!
Oftentimes, the bathroom just isn’t going to cut it…TOO small. What about your hallway? Have you considered a thin pull-out shelf that is hiding in the hallway? Often times these handsome built-ins can tuck away in to the wall and nobody is the wiser.
Cubbies…and We Don’t Mean the Ball Team
Just like we mentioned with the storage tower concept, there is often dead space in the walls of your bathroom. Oftentimes near the bathtub, there will be a wall with internal dead space. This is a great place for us to be able to open this up and frame it out. With shelves installed, you have cute spaces to place your rolled towels or matching baskets. These neatly designed spaces allow for a very peaceful and eye-pleasing way to keep all of your extra bathroom supplies close by.
One more great space for cubbies can be right near the bathroom sink in a short, narrow shelving unit. This will keep your powder room or sink area looking tidy and neat while still giving you the air of style without looking like Olivia Organizer blew up in your bathroom.
Skip Out On The Cupboards
What about jumping right past having cupboard doors, and going with an open concept and pull out drawers? Most bathrooms are going to come standard in a house with a cupboard space below the sink. Most people will never question the design of that space, since it is what we are conditioned to see. However, who do you know that wants to open up those doors and climb around underneath the sink trying to find the replacement razors or that new bottle of foaming hand soap? This space becomes an inevitable black hole! An easier solution is to swap out the space for stylish drawers that you can keep organized, provide more storage, and are a lot easier to get in to – all while keeping the vanity intact!
Sink Ledge
A wonderfully cute option is a built-in ledge behind your sink that becomes a terrific place to store your toothbrush, aromatic candle, and bath salts without overcrowding the existing countertops.
Custom Cabinets and Drawers
With all of this talk about new and clever places to hide your bathroom bonanza, what about the more traditional but up to date, custom cabinetry?
